Tucked down an alley in the centre of Melbourne, label and record store Off The Hip houses some of the finest wares in rock, garage, power pop, blues, soul, psych and other gems close to or within these genres. Stocking both new and secong hand vinyl and CDs, Off The Hip is a one stop rock shop with reasonably priced swag and many rare vinyl records. OTH also has a strong focus on stocking Australian artists so if there’s a particular record you’re after from some obscure Aussie artist, there’s a good chance you may just find it here.
My personal favourite find here was a copy of the 30th Anniversary edition of Motorhead’s first album, “Motorhead”, on Devil’s Jukebox Records re-issued on 180g vinyl in a numbered edition of 666 copies. This copy also came with a bonus EP on grey vinyl of B-Sides (aka the “Beer Drinkers And Hell Raisers” EP), plus a promo photo and poster. The sticker on the front says “Review Copy”. I picked this mint (and what appears to be) unplayed gem up for, if I remember correctly, $35 (AUS). Score!
Also of note is that each month, the shop holds instore parties where the label’s bands perform for free in the store on a chosen Friday night. These gigs usually kick off right after the store closes from 6:30pm onwards and they are always well attended. I highly recommend attending one of these if you haven’t done so already as they are quite fun and a great way to meet others who dig the groovy sounds of rock n roll.
Off The Hip records can be found at the basement level of 381 Flinders Lane, Melbourne (enter via Tavistock Place). The shop’s hours are Tues: 12noon – 5pm, Wed/Thurs: 10am til 5:30pm, Fri: 10am til 6:30pm, and Sat: 11am til 5pm. You can contact the shop on (03) 9621 2044 or through their website: www.offthehip.com.au or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
